The IDs cannot be used by themselves to verify a voter’s identity.
New Hampshire election officials are seeking emergency intervention from the U.S. Supreme Court in an effort to stop student IDs from being used at polling places in November.
The state Attorney General’s Office wants the justices to overturn a 2-1 federal appeals court decision issued Wednesday night. That ruling left in place a lower court order allowing college students to present student IDs along with another approved form of identification when voting. The IDs cannot be used by themselves to verify a voter’s identity.
At the center of the dispute is a new state law that bars student IDs from being accepted at the polls. Poll workers have already been instructed not to take student IDs for any purpose, but the latest court action would let election officials consider them as part of the process of confirming a voter’s identity when no accepted ID is available.
